 DBMS data independence

Data independence refers to the ability to change the structure of a database without affecting the application programs that access the data.

There are two types of data independence:

Logical data independence

Physical data independence.

1)   Logical data independence is the ability to change the logical structure of a database (e.g., adding, deleting, or modifying fields, tables, or relationships) without affecting the application programs that access the data. This is achieved by separating the logical structure of the data from the physical representation of the data on storage media.

2)   Physical data independence is the ability to change the physical structure of a database (e.g., changing the hardware or storage media) without affecting the application programs that access the data. This is achieved by separating the physical representation of the data from the logical structure of the data.

Data independence is an important concept in database design because it allows the structure of the database to be changed without affecting the programs that use the data. This can make it easier to maintain and update a database over time, as the programs that access the data do not need to be modified when the structure of the database is changed.
