What is Computer Network/Definition:


computer network is a collection of interconnected devices, such as computers, servers, switches, routers, and other hardware, that are connected to each other to share resources and exchange information. The interconnected devices use a set of protocols to communicate, this allows them to share resources, communicate and collaborate with one another and with users. 


Types of computer network/what are the types of computer network?


There are some types of computer network which are as:


1)    LAN(Local area network)

2)    MAN(Metropolitan area network)

3)    WAN(Wide area network)

4)    PAN(Personal area network)

LAN(Local area network)


A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and devices in a small area, such as a home, office, or school. LANs are typically used for file sharing, printing, and communication among the devices connected to it.


Advantages of LAN:


High speed: LANs are capable of providing high-speed data transfer, allowing for efficient and fast file sharing, data transfer, and communication among the devices connected to it.


Cost-effective: LANs are relatively inexpensive to set up and maintain, as they do not require expensive equipment or specialized skills.


Resource sharing: LANs allow for easy resource sharing, such as printers, scanners, and storage devices, among the devices connected to it.


Security: LANs can be configured to provide a secure environment, with access controls and security measures in place to protect the network from unauthorized access.


Centralized management: LANs allow for centralized management and control, making it easy to monitor and maintain the network.


Disadvantages of LAN:


Limited geographic coverage: LANs are limited to a small geographic area, and devices outside of this area will not be able to access the network.


Limited scalability: LANs have a limited number of devices that can be connected to the network, and adding more devices may require additional hardware and software.


Limited resource sharing: LANs are limited to the devices connected to it, and resources cannot be shared with devices outside of the network.


Vulnerability to malware and cyber attacks: LANs are vulnerable to malware and cyber attacks, and special security measures are required to protect the network from these threats.


Limited redundancy: LANs are dependent on the devices connected to it, and if any device fails, the entire network may be affected.


MAN(Metropolitan area network)


A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a computer network that connects computers and devices within a specific geographic area, such as a city or metropolitan area. MANs are typically used for data transfer, remote access, and communication among the devices connected to it.


Advantages of a MAN:


Large Area Coverage: MANs cover a large area and can connect multiple LANs or WANs together. This allows for easy communication and data transfer between devices in different locations within the same city or metropolitan area.


High Speed: MANs use high-speed technologies, such as fiber optic cables or microwave transmission, to provide fast data transfer speeds.


Improved Reliability: MANs typically have multiple paths for data to travel, which can help to improve reliability and avoid network outages.


Centralized Management: MANs can be centrally managed, which makes it easier to monitor and maintain the network.

Disadvantages of a MAN:

WAN(Wide area network)


A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a network that connects computers and devices over a larger geographic area, such as a city, state, or country. WANs are typically used for remote access, data transfer, and communication among the devices connected to it.


Advantages of WAN:


Large geographic coverage: WANs can connect devices over a large area, allowing for communication and data transfer between remote locations.


Remote access: WANs allow for remote access to resources and services, such as file servers, databases, and applications. This allows employees to access company resources from remote locations.


Increased productivity: WANs allow employees to access resources and services from remote locations, which can increase productivity and collaboration.


Scalability: WANs can easily be scaled to accommodate more devices and users as a business grows.


Reliability: WANs use multiple communication channels, such as leased lines, satellite links, and VPNs, which can increase the reliability of the network.


Disadvantages of WAN:

PAN(Personal area network)


A Personal Area Network (PAN) is a type of computer network that connects devices in close proximity to one another, such as within a person's home or office. PANs typically connect devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and personal computers.


Advantages of PAN:


Convenience: PANs allow for easy sharing of files and resources among devices in close proximity. This can be useful for sharing files, printers, and other resources.


Security: PANs are generally considered to be more secure than other types of networks because they are only accessible to devices in close proximity. This can help to protect sensitive data and personal information.


Cost-effective: PANs are relatively inexpensive to set up and maintain, making them a cost-effective option for connecting devices in a small area.


No need for internet connection: Since PANs connect devices that are in close proximity to one another, they do not require an internet connection.


Disadvantages of PAN:


Limited coverage: PANs have a limited coverage area, and devices outside of this area will not be able to connect to the network.


Limited scalability: PANs are typically designed to connect a small number of devices, and adding more devices can be difficult.


Limited access: PANs are generally only accessible to devices in close proximity, which can make it difficult to share files and resources with people who are not physically present.

Virtual Private Network (VPN): 

A VPN is a network that uses encryption and other security measures to create a private and secure connection over a public network, such as the internet. VPNs are typically used for remote access, data transfer, and communication among the devices connected to it.


Cloud Network: 

A cloud network is a network that uses the internet and remote servers to store, manage, and process data. Cloud networks are typically used for data storage, file sharing, and communication among the devices connected to it.


Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Network: 

A P2P network is a network where each device connected to it can share files and resources directly with one another without the need for a central server.


Client-Server Network: 

A client-server network is a network where one or more servers provide resources and services to other devices on the network. These other devices, called clients, request and use these resources and services.
